In the first fifteen days of voter registration in Mozambique, more than 2.4 million voters have been registered, reaching 32% of the registration target, which stands at around 7.7 million voters. This significant progress was shared by Regina Matsinhe, spokeswoman for the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE), showing the country's commitment to strengthening democratic participation.
Despite the advances, the process faces challenges, especially in areas affected by terrorist incursions, such as the district of Quissanga, in Cabo Delgado. STAE is working hard to ensure a safe start to registration in this region, having already managed to establish the necessary conditions in Ibo. These efforts seek to ensure that all Mozambican citizens, regardless of adversity, can exercise their right to vote.
In addition to the challenges mentioned above, adverse weather conditions, namely heavy rains, hampered registration in some parts of the country, testing STAE's logistics and planning. Adapting to circumstances has been a constant feature of the process.
Registration is not limited to national territory; it also extends to the Mozambican diaspora, with the start of voter registration for Mozambicans living abroad. It is estimated that around 2 million voters will be registered outside the country, reinforcing the inclusion of the entire eligible population in the electoral spectrum.
