The Mayor of Maputo, Rasaque Manhique, fired the starting gun for a pioneering initiative in Mozambique’s banking sector that promotes sport, health and inclusion.

The celebration of Millennium bim’s 31st anniversary took on special significance on Sunday, 25 October, with the 16th edition of the Millennium bim Run, which attracted 3,000 registered participants and once again brought sport to the streets of Maputo. The initiative brought together athletes, families, Bank employees and physical activity enthusiasts for a morning marked by competition, social interaction and the promotion of health.

The starting gun for the 14-kilometre road race was fired by the Mayor of Maputo, Rasaque Silvano Manhique, who joined the Bank’s anniversary celebrations through an initiative that encourages participation in sport and the use of the city’s public spaces for activities that promote health and well-being.

Starting outside Millennium bim’s headquarters on Rua dos Desportistas, the programme featured three events, enabling people from different backgrounds to take part. In addition to the 14-kilometre road race, there was a 9-kilometre race for athletes with disabilities and a 7-kilometre walk, which was officially started by the Bank’s Chief Executive Officer, Rui Pedro.

The variety of events is one of the distinguishing features of the Millennium bim Run, combining competitive sport with the participation of people of different ages, abilities and fitness levels. The inclusion of athletes with disabilities continues to play an important role in this initiative, helping to raise the profile of adaptive sport and promote equal opportunities in sporting participation.

For Rui Pedro, Chief Executive Officer of Millennium bim, holding the Run on the Bank’s anniversary represents a special way of celebrating its history alongside the Mozambican people.

“Celebrating Millennium bim’s 31st anniversary alongside Mozambicans, on the streets of Maputo, has special significance. Over 16 editions, this Run has become a meeting place that promotes sport, health and inclusion. It is also an expression of the close relationship we want to continue building with the community,” Rui Pedro emphasised.

Millennium bim was a pioneer in Mozambique’s financial sector in organising a race of this kind. With 16 editions, the Millennium bim Run is the oldest running event in the city of Maputo and remains a leading initiative in promoting sporting participation, healthy lifestyles and inclusion.

The morning also featured a Health Fair, warm-up and stretching sessions, and entertainment activities, providing participants with opportunities to socialise and raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and well-being.

In its 16th edition, the Millennium bim Run reaffirms the Bank’s connection with the city of Maputo and the role of sport in bringing the community together and promoting healthy lifestyles.
