Mozambique has set an ambitious vision to become one of the leaders in hydrogen production in Southern Africa by 2030, building this goal into its Energy Transition Strategy (ETS). With a plan that envisages investment in the order of 80 billion dollars by 2050, the country aims to tap its vast potential in natural resources to develop a robust hydrogen industry, focusing especially on green hydrogen production.

Mozambique's wealth in resources such as hydroelectric, natural gas, solar and wind power positions the country uniquely to support sustainable hydrogen production, enhancing not only the meeting of domestic needs but also its competitiveness in international markets. The relatively low cost of access to these energy sources could be a key differentiator in ensuring the viability and success of this strategic bet.

Within the outlined strategy, the Mozambican Government proposes to draw up, during this very year, a comprehensive development plan for the sector. This plan should be based on a detailed analysis that will make it possible to define the desired scale of production and identify the primary target markets, bearing in mind that most of the hydrogen produced is expected to be for export.

This move towards hydrogen not only underlines Mozambique's commitment to energy transition and environmental sustainability but also anticipates the creation of new economic and employment opportunities, contributing to strengthening the country's position in the regional and global energy landscape.

Mozambique's “hydrogen strategy” thus represents a bold and strategic step towards innovation and leadership in clean energy production, in line with global trends of reducing dependence on fossil fuels and combating climate change.
