In Niassa province, Mozambique, an ambitious campaign for the free distribution of mosquito nets is being organised with the aim of reducing the alarming malaria rate in the region. In 2022, the disease caused the deaths of 160 people, a significant increase from the 103 fatalities recorded in 2021.
The province's governor, Elina Judite Massangele, said the aim of the campaign is to take Niassa off the list of Mozambican areas with the highest incidence of malaria. The initiative hopes to reach 90% of the province's approximately two million inhabitants.
To achieve this ambitious goal, Elina Judite Massangele calls on all social actors to collaborate in this joint effort. District governments, community leaders, educators, influential figures, parents and guardians, cooperation partners and the media are encouraged to take part in the mass dissemination and discussion of mosquito nets.
Last year, Niassa faced a malaria prevalence rate of 46.6%. The province recorded a total of 719,562 cases of the disease in 2022, a worrying figure that highlights the urgent need for effective measures to combat this scourge.
