Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI) has once again affirmed its commitment to sustainability by continuing the Bio Debit Card, a financial initiative with real environmental impact, developed in partnership with the Foundation for the Conservation of Biodiversity (BIOFUND).
Launched in 2017 as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility policy, the Bio Card stands out for two main reasons: it is made of biodegradable material derived from maize, making it the first of its kind in the country, and it channels 100% of the revenue generated by transactions at POS terminals into funding environmental conservation projects in Mozambique.
“Every transaction represents a concrete step towards preserving our biodiversity,” said Francisco Costa, chairman of BCI's Executive Committee, stressing that this card is much more than a banking instrument. “It is an agent of environmental and social transformation.”
Thanks to the funds raised, it has been possible to support and expand crucial projects for the protection of endangered species, such as rhinoceroses and sea turtles. The initiatives that have benefited include:
the conservation of Raphia australis in the Bobole Botanical Reserve;
the monitoring of turtle migration routes in the Primeiras and Segundas Islands (Environmental Protection Area);
and the revitalisation of the Botanical Garden of Eduardo Mondlane University.
According to a statement released by the bank, this partnership with BIOFUND reinforces the conviction that joint initiatives between the financial sector and civil society can have a lasting impact. BCI's commitment to sustainable innovation places it among the institutions that look to the future with responsibility and vision.
