Xai-Xai, a city in southern Mozambique, faces the challenge of reviving abandoned buildings dating from the colonial period, in an attempt to boost its tourism. The large seafront hotel, now in ruins, is a testament to the region's tourism potential and to how much remains to be done to promote this destination.

Ismael Suelmia, vice-president of the Association of the Hotel and Similar Industry of Gaza province (Asinhos), expressed his concern about the situation. "On our beach, we have buildings that have been abandoned since colonial times. We are talking about more than 1,000 potential jobs that could have been created," he said.

Comparing it with Inhambane, Mozambique's main tourist destination, Suelmia believes that Xai-Xai has failed to make full use of its tourism potential. A lack of promotion, investment and hotel provision are some of the reasons cited.

The solution, according to Suelmia, would be to offer tax incentives to businesspeople interested in investing in the region, especially in restoring these historic buildings. He points out that, besides the Hotel Xai-Xai, there are other buildings, such as the Hotel Chongoene, that are also awaiting a solution.

The association, which represents around 150 businesspeople in the tourism sector in Gaza province, has been drawing attention to the lack of accommodation and activities in the region. "We only have five or six lodges available, which is not enough," says Suelmia.

Ernesto Pita, manager of the "Reef Resort", stresses the need to diversify the tourism offer. "We need more than just accommodation. Xai-Xai does not have enough activities for tourists," he laments.

Abraão Zandamela, manager of the Go Wild Resort, echoes this sentiment, emphasising the need to create tourist "itineraries" and attractive packages. "Xai-Xai is a pearl. It is peaceful and safe. We just need more initiatives and investors with vision," he concludes.

The revitalisation of Xai-Xai would not only benefit the local economy, but would also preserve the region's rich history and culture, attracting tourists from all over the world to experience the beauty and hospitality of Mozambique.
