Vodacom is preparing to significantly increase its investment in Mozambique over the next two years, in a move aimed at accelerating the expansion of connectivity throughout the national territory and improving the quality of the telecommunications services available to citizens.

The announcement was made by the international group's chief executive, Shameel Joosub, after a meeting held in Maputo with the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo. The meeting focused on prospects for technological innovation and on strategies that could drive the country's digital transformation.

During the talks, initiatives the operator has already implemented successfully in various African and European markets were reviewed, with a view to identifying solutions that could be adapted to Mozambican reality. The company also expressed its intention to work closely with the Government to accelerate the modernisation of technological infrastructure.

Among the priorities set out are the expansion of the fibre-optic network, the strengthening of satellite communications and the extension of 5G coverage, considered essential to meet the growing demands of the digital economy.

The investment plan also includes the creation of new strategic infrastructure, including the construction of a data centre and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence-based solutions, initiatives that should strengthen the country's technological capacity and support the development of new digital services.

The President of the Republic welcomed the projects presented by the operator with optimism and assured it that the Executive will provide the support needed to facilitate delivery of the planned investments.

The expansion of fifth-generation technology is, in fact, one of the targets set by the Government, which aims to guarantee 5G coverage in all provincial capitals, special economic zones and main tourist destinations by 2027.

The Mozambican market currently has three mobile phone operators. The recent award of licences to operate 5G technology represents an important step in the country's digitalisation, creating conditions for new investment and for the modernisation of telecommunications services.
