On 7 December, Mozambique hosted the public presentation of the Uxene Smart City project, a historic milestone attended by distinguished guests from various prominent fields of Mozambican society. Uxene is born as a response to Mozambique's growing demographic and economic challenges, particularly those related to the population density of Maputo, Matola and Marracuene, which translate into ever greater needs, placing enormous pressure on the weakened existing urban infrastructure.
According to Henrique Bettencourt, the project's CEO, the new centre will be sustainable, inclusive and integrated, a place of excellence to live, work and learn, socialise and invest. Uxene is not merely a hub of urban and economic development; it is a commitment to a new way of living, one that is sustainable and improves the lifestyle of the people who will live in the city; that is accessible and inclusive for all social strata. Uxene will integrate innovative, environmentally friendly technologies, at the service of all, for a more cost-efficient life. Smart solutions for mobility, energy and the environment: this will be Mozambique's futuristic city.
The project, valued at more than 3 billion US dollars, will get under way in May 2023, on an area of approximately 565 hectares, and is expected to house 100,000 inhabitants. It will have 50% green areas and will create more than 6,500 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect ones.
“Because it is a large-scale project, agreements have been sealed with several national and foreign companies which, with their know-how, will bring added value that will allow for a great improvement in quality of life. Uxene Smart City will be a safe, practical and convenient city, contributing to a more ecologically sustainable life, as well as enabling greater mobility and connectivity,” said Michel Ussene, Chairman of Uxene.
