The renowned French energy multinational TotalEnergies has announced ambitious plans for the expansion and modernisation of the airport located near its gas production site in northern Mozambique. This initiative is an integral part of the company's commitment to strengthening its presence in the region and continuing its natural gas projects.

With the planned expansion, Pemba airport will be able to receive larger aircraft, namely Boeing 737s. This capacity will be achieved by lengthening the runway, which will go from the current 1,700 metres to 2,300 metres. This development is a direct response to the growth in air traffic in the region, driven by increased activity in the natural gas projects.

This announcement is also an encouraging indicator of the imminent restart of Mozambique's Area 1 project. TotalEnergies has shown a renewed commitment to security, prioritising robust measures in this area, especially after earlier interruptions to the project owing to security concerns.

Patrick Pouyanné, head of TotalEnergies, expressed the company's firm intention to move ahead with the project before the end of this year.

For his part, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, reinforced the Government's position, stating that the TotalEnergies project would be resumed "at the first opportunity". This statement underlines the significant progress made in restoring security in Cabo Delgado, the result of concerted counter-insurgency efforts.

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, also spoke on the matter, highlighting a "prevailing optimism" and a "sense of urgency" regarding the continuation of activities associated with the gas project led by the French multinational.

This series of developments is viewed with great anticipation, promising to bring significant benefits to the Mozambican economy and to the local population.
