Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), the national flag carrier, went public this Monday, 30 October, to announce a significant expansion of its operations, thus marking a new chapter in its post-COVID-19 pandemic history. This announcement follows the recent partnership established with Fly Modern Ark South Africa (Pty) Limited (FMA), a prestigious consultancy firm, which was appointed in April 2023 with the aim of restructuring LAM, targeting profitability and long-term financial sustainability.
Among the new developments announced, the launch of the Maputo - Lisbon - Maputo route stands out, LAM's first international operation since the start of the pandemic. The decision to inaugurate this route was taken after a "rigorous viability analysis", ensuring that financial sustainability remains a priority for the airline. The inaugural flight is scheduled for 12 December 2023, departing from Lisbon, and the first flight from Maputo will take place the following day. The operation will have three flights a week, providing options for both business travellers and tourists.
The schedules have been carefully planned to facilitate connections with domestic flights in Mozambique and regional flights operated by LAM. Flights between Maputo and Lisbon will be operated with a modern B777 aircraft, offering a total of 302 seats spread across three classes: Business, Premium Economy and Economy. LAM also stands out for offering competitive and affordable fares, aimed at stimulating air traffic.
At the same time, LAM also announced the start of operations on the Maputo - Cape Town - Maputo route, from 22 November 2023. This new route is seen as an opportunity to strengthen relations between Mozambique and South Africa, as well as to contribute to the revitalisation of tourism and trade between the two countries. There will be three flights a week, with schedules designed to facilitate connections with leading tourist destinations in Mozambique.
LAM's Chief Executive expressed his enthusiasm for these new operations, highlighting that "this is a very significant step in the resurgence of LAM, marking the start of a new era for the airline and for aviation in Mozambique". LAM thus reaffirms its commitment to the development of the Mozambican aviation sector, contributing to regional and intercontinental connectivity.
