Following the inauguration of the Lichinga Provincial Hospital, in Niassa, in northern Mozambique, President Filipe Nyusi outlined ambitious plans to expand the country's healthcare network. In his speech, the head of state pointed to the urgency of increasing the number of district hospitals in various parts of the country by 2024. The target has been set: at least 60 district hospitals are to be built, to make healthcare more accessible to the population, given that almost a third of Mozambicans face significant obstacles in accessing it.

In his address, President Nyusi stressed the need to implement this project in at least 60 of the 105 districts that lack suitable hospital facilities. This move forms part of the government strategy known as "One district, one hospital", an ongoing effort to ensure that every Mozambican citizen has access to quality healthcare.

The Mozambican leader highlighted the importance of speeding up the process of achieving universal access to healthcare, especially in rural areas, where more than half of the population faces marked difficulties in accessing basic health services. Nyusi indicated that, at present, around 31 million Mozambicans are directly affected by this disparity in access to adequate healthcare.

Regarding funding for this ambitious plan, Nyusi noted that the funds for the construction of at least 30 district hospitals were secured during an international health conference held in July in the capital, Maputo. The government remains committed to gathering more resources to bring this crucial project to fruition.

On a related note, after a meeting held in Maputo in July, the Director-General of the World Health Organization praised the initiative, stressing the importance of substantial investment in the health sector, particularly in this post-pandemic period.

This news is a ray of hope and a promise of progress for the Mozambican people, who long for tangible improvements in the country's health infrastructure. The expansion of the hospital network is seen as a vital step in the right direction, promoting the health and wellbeing of all citizens.
