The winds of change are beginning to blow in Mozambique, as Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane reveals the Government's intention to set up a specialised police unit to fight kidnappings, thus promising a safer future for the population.
Maleiane, in a speech closing the parliamentary question session, said on Thursday, 11 May, that the Government has been concentrating its efforts on strengthening institutional capacity. The purpose of these steps is to enable the police and SERNIC (National Criminal Investigation Service) to intensify their preventive and combative actions against a range of crimes - kidnappings, homicides, human trafficking, robberies, drugs, among others.
These measures, according to the Prime Minister, have been vital for improving the response to the challenges these issues pose. The new unit, dedicated exclusively to preventing and combating kidnappings, already has its officers selected, a revelation that follows the line of announcements made by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi.
Maleiane stressed the importance of this unit being equal to the operational and investigative challenges posed by kidnappings. With this initiative, the Government of Mozambique signals a serious commitment to the safety of citizens, a step that is expected to be an important milestone towards a safer and calmer future in the country.
