Machava Stadium, the historic venue for celebrations and sporting competitions in Mozambique, is about to undergo a significant transformation. The project to redevelop and modernise this sports facility, valued at 10 million dollars in its first phase, promises to revitalise the space and give it a renewed image and cutting-edge features.
The initiative, which was detailed during a recent visit by leading figures in the transport and sports sectors, includes the installation of a new natural grass pitch, the modernisation of the lighting system and the introduction of advanced turnstiles for effective control of entrances. The stands, changing rooms and VIP stand will also receive substantial improvements.
Agostinho Francisco Langa Júnior, chairman of the board of directors of Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique, together with Arnaldo Manjate, president of Clube Ferroviário de Maputo, and Carlos Gilberto Mendes, Secretary of State for Sport, were among the figures who inspected the facilities and shared their visions for the stadium's future.
The project will be carried out in two phases, with the first expected to be completed by the end of next year, allowing the stadium to meet the requirements for approval by FIFA and CAF. The second phase, planned for 2025, will include covering all the stands.
Besides the renovation of the stadium, the master plan includes the creation of a multi-purpose arena, shopping centres, training pitches and a sports hall, with the aim of ensuring the economic sustainability of the complex and preventing it from becoming an investment with no return.
Carlos Gilberto Mendes expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the importance of expanding sports infrastructure in the Infulene area, known for its football tradition. The construction of an arena is also anticipated as a necessary complement for indoor sports.
This ambitious project not only promises to restore to Machava Stadium its mystique and glory but also positions itself as a catalyst for the sporting and economic development of the region, ensuring that the stadium's legacy stays alive for decades to come.
