The Coop neighbourhood in Maputo has recently witnessed the opening of a new sports centre dedicated to padel, a rising sport that has been winning the hearts of Mozambicans. This venue, named Play Padel, reflects its founders’ passion for sport and for the physical and mental well-being that sport brings.
The idea of creating a padel venue in the heart of Maputo arose from a desire to capitalise on a sport that, although relatively new in the country, already showed significant potential to attract enthusiasts of all ages. The investors, driven by an evident passion for sport, saw a business opportunity as well as a way of promoting healthy habits among the population, especially the young. The strategic location in Coop, a central and easily accessible area, was chosen to ensure that everyone could enjoy the facilities. This has undoubtedly been one of the factors in the success of the project, which aims to provide a sporting experience accessible to all, regardless of their social circumstances.

The main aim of this new club is to attract a new generation of athletes, promoting padel as a healthy alternative for filling free time. Social responsibility is a fundamental pillar of the project, which proposes to offer the sport to disadvantaged communities, giving them the chance to take it up as a hobby or, who knows, a future profession. Among the goals set out by the founders, the most notable are promoting social interaction, strengthening the sense of belonging, improving physical fitness and, above all, raising the participants’ quality of life. Padel, being an inclusive sport, knows no barriers of age, gender or religion, making it an activity accessible to all.
With three padel courts, a sports shop, leisure areas, spaces dedicated to children and a restaurant, the club offers its visitors a complete experience. The restaurant, named Match Point, stands out for its healthy dishes and the variety of options, catering to the needs and preferences of all customers, regardless of their beliefs or dietary restrictions. The site where this centre was built previously housed a nearly abandoned pitch. Transforming this space into a modern padel club was a challenging process, but it has brought new life to the Coop neighbourhood. Collaboration with local authorities and overcoming obstacles, such as adverse weather conditions and a lack of skilled labour, were essential to the success of the project.

Since its pre-opening, this sports venue has received positive feedback from visitors and players. The quality of the facilities, the convenient location and the efficient service have been widely praised. Interestingly, more than 80% of people who try padel for the first time keep playing it, a clear indicator of the accessibility and appeal of the sport. Ease of learning, compared with other racket sports, is one of the factors contributing to this success. The inclusive nature of padel, which allows people of all ages and genders to take part, is another of its attractions. The compact courts and surrounding walls create a unique game dynamic in which the ball is almost always in play, increasing the intensity and interest of playing.

On this club’s horizon, a number of tournaments and championships are already planned, both internal and in collaboration with other sports centres in the city. The partnership with Padel Club Maputo is an example of the strategy for the growth and expansion of the sport in the Mozambican capital. Together, the two centres aim to increase the visibility and popularity of padel, creating a cohesive and dynamic sporting community.

The founders of this new venue are optimistic about the future of the sport in our country. With only two years of existence here, padel is already showing clear signs of growth, following the global trend of popularity. In Maputo and Beira, the number of players continues to rise, reflecting growing interest in the sport. Mozambicans’ curiosity and enthusiasm are evident, with many wanting to learn more about the sport and make it part of their daily lives. Despite this growth, those in charge maintain a cautious and strategic view of the future. Expanding the facilities and introducing new sports are under consideration, but the priority for now is to consolidate the success of this project and ensure that the experience offered to its members continues to be one of excellence.

Play Padel promises to be a centrepiece of Maputo’s sporting landscape, promoting the growth of the sport, well-being and social cohesion in the city.
