Maputo National Park (PNAM) distributed, last Thursday (11th), more than 3.7 million meticais to communities in the district of Matutuíne, corresponding to 20% of its 2024 revenues, generated through the sustainable use of natural resources.
According to the newspaper Domingo, this amount was shared among 21 communities located in the area bordering the park, in Maputo province. The measure forms part of the policy of sharing the benefits arising from environmental conservation and ecotourism.
The handover of the funds is the result of joint commitment between the PNAM administration, the community engagement team and various bodies operating in the sector. Particularly notable is the role of the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC) and the Peace Parks Foundation, which have driven significant investments in preserving local biodiversity — an effort reflected in the increase in the number of visitors to the protected area.
The official ceremony was attended by the Secretary of State for Maputo province, Henriques Bongence, flanked by representatives of the provincial and district governments, as well as the park’s management.
In his address, the Secretary of State stressed the strategic importance of collaboration between communities and PNAM, emphasising that this partnership is essential to ensuring the sustainability of natural resources, whose conservation, when well coordinated, generates tangible and lasting returns for local populations.
