Mozambique has announced a new and promising natural gas discovery in the PT5-C area, off the coast of Inhambane, reinforcing its position as one of the countries with the largest gas reserves in Africa. According to Filimão Suaze, spokesman for the Council of Ministers, assessments will be carried out to determine the commercial viability of the reserve.
However, Suaze warned of the strategic and geopolitical implications, noting that discoveries of subsoil resources often attract outside attention, a challenge to which Mozambique must respond with resilience and unity. "With external forces at play, internal ones must play their part to defend and develop the country", he stressed.
Exploration of the PT5-C area is led by Sasol Petroleum Moçambique Exploration Limitada (70%), in partnership with the National Hydrocarbons Company (30%). This discovery adds to three other projects in the Rovuma basin, highlighting the security challenges affecting the sector, as shown by the suspension of the TotalEnergies project in Cabo Delgado.
The Government has committed to following a transparent and cautious approach, with public tender processes, while continuing to monitor the global scene and the pressures that natural wealth can attract. The new discovery promises to strengthen the Mozambican economy, if well managed and protected from internal and external threats.
