President Filipe Nyusi has announced that Mozambique is about to significantly increase the volume of cargo handled, from 48 million tonnes in 2019 to 83 million by the end of this year. This statement was made during the inauguration of the extension and doubling of the Ressano Garcia railway line.

Over the past five years, Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) has invested more than 600 million meticais in infrastructure, training of human resources and equipment. Nyusi stressed that this expansion is part of the Government's five-year plan, intended to increase transport capacity and improve logistical efficiency.

The President praised CFM for its progress on rail and port infrastructure, stressing that the investments must be turned into profits. The extension of the Ressano Garcia line also aims to ease congestion on National Road Number Four (EN4), frequently used to transport ore to the Port of Maputo.

In addition, the new City Rail Terminal at Maputo Central Station was inaugurated, increasing its capacity from 25,000 to 75,000 passengers a day, and offering various support services such as immigration, police, customs and convenience shops.

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, said that these infrastructures are fundamental to the integrated development of the Maputo corridor. Nyusi mentioned other ongoing projects, including the modernisation of the Port of Nacala, the expansion of the Port of Maputo, and the rehabilitation of the Machipanda line, linking Mozambique to Zimbabwe.
