The city of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, expects to receive around 98,000 visitors during the festive season, of whom 48,000 will be Mozambican and 50,000 foreign, the Secretary of State for the City of Maputo, Vicente Joaquim, announced today.
According to the secretary, 60,800 overnight stays are expected, with 29,792 by Mozambican visitors and 31,008 by foreign visitors. The booking situation is considered stable and satisfactory. Joaquim highlighted that the increase in the flow of foreign visitors is due in part to the introduction and use of the electronic visa, the E-Visa.
The authorities say they are prepared to cope with the pressure on the various sectors of activity caused by the celebrations of Family Day and New Year. Multisectoral operational committees have been set up to ensure that the festivities take place in an atmosphere of order and calm.
In the transport sector, measures are being taken to guarantee the movement of people and goods. In health, medicines and surgical equipment have been stocked up in hospitals. And, to ensure the normal functioning of economic activities, joint work is being carried out with the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE), ensuring the availability of food and basic services.
The Secretary appealed to society, especially motorists, to avoid excess and to ensure peaceful festivities. He asked families to protect their children and the police to maintain public order and calm, respecting the police code of conduct.
