An important meeting took place in Maputo on 5 June between the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Project Implementation Office (GPMN) and a high-level delegation from the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). The meeting, at which the project's funding and structure were discussed, was the stage for substantial decisions and news.
The EU and the EIB jointly announced that they will provide substantial funding for the high-voltage Power Transmission Line infrastructure, of up to 300 million euros, of which 50 million will be a non-repayable grant.
In addition, it was revealed that up to 200 million euros will be made available to fund the Mphanda Nkuwa Hydroelectric Power Plant project.
The meeting was an opportunity to share relevant information on the current state of the project's implementation, as well as updates on the technical and environmental studies, financing processes, the choice of strategic partner, energy market prospects and the implementation timetable. It should be mentioned that it followed GMNK's participation in the panel discussion “Rolling-out the AEGEI: acelerating the implementation” – organised by the European Union – which took place in Egypt on the occasion of the 27th United Nations Conference
