Mozambique Airlines (LAM) has marked a significant milestone in its 44-year history by launching, for the first time, a service dedicated exclusively to cargo transport. This new service, which began operating on Wednesday, is intended to meet the growing needs of the Mozambican business sector, offering the capacity to carry up to 17 tonnes of cargo per flight.
The service promises two trips to each provincial capital, with the exception of Tete, which will have only one trip available. This innovative flight can cover up to 3,500 km without refuelling, representing a significant advance in the country's transport logistics. The continuity and success of the service will depend largely on the involvement and take-up of the private sector.
Hamilton Alissone, Deputy Minister, stressed the importance of business support for the success of this initiative, emphasising the need for LAM to be alert and ready to adjust to market demands. The market, according to Alissone, has expressed an urgent need for fast transport services for foodstuffs, medicines, construction materials, household appliances and car parts.
For his part, the Director of Fly Modern Ark highlighted the added value this cargo aircraft will bring to Mozambique, marking the first time LAM has ventured into air freight, despite its long history in the goods transport sector.
As an inaugural gesture, LAM donated to the National Institute for Disaster Management and Risk Reduction a voucher allowing the free transport of one tonne of products intended to help victims of Tropical Storm Filipo, which affected the Sofala region and the south of the country. This act symbolises LAM's commitment to contributing to the well-being of Mozambican society, beyond its commercial operations.
