At least twenty young people from various neighbourhoods of the city of Quelimane, in Zambézia province, have begun intensive biogas training, as part of the Youth Climate Change Initiatives Programme. The action is promoted by the local Municipal Council, with the support of the international foundation Bloomberg Philanthropies.

According to Filipe Ribeiro, representative of the municipal climate change project, the selection focused on neighbourhoods located next to the mangroves – areas particularly sensitive to environmental impact. The training aims to offer alternatives to the traditional use of wood and charcoal, practices that have contributed to the destruction of these protected areas.

“We want these young people to become agents of change in their communities, preventing the felling of mangroves and promoting sustainable energy solutions such as biogas”, said Ribeiro, highlighting the importance of environmental awareness combined with youth inclusion.

At the same time, the Municipal Council is carrying out a reforestation campaign at several strategic points in the city, as part of its integrated strategy for adaptation to and mitigation of climate change.
