The Japanese government announced yesterday funding of 72,780 dollars for the construction of classrooms at the Mecuburi Rural Family Polytechnic Institute, in Nampula province. The initiative aims to expand the institution's capacity, allowing it to accommodate more than 200 students for activities such as lessons, application of new technologies and rural extension.
The amount will be made available through the Japanese government's Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) programme and will be managed directly by the educational institution. According to the Japanese Embassy in Maputo, besides the institute's students, young people from neighbouring communities, especially women, will be able to benefit from the infrastructure to be built.
Japan, one of the main funders of projects in Mozambique, recently reaffirmed its intention to maintain cooperation with the country. However, it called on the Mozambican government for a swift stabilisation of security and “dialogue” between all parties, in a context of growing post-election tension.
“Japan intends to continue cooperating with Mozambique for the prosperity of the peoples of both countries, based on long-standing friendship,” declared Kitamura Toshihiro, spokesman for Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement released by the Japanese Embassy.
