Last Sunday, Mozambique and other East African nations experienced a significant disruption in Internet connectivity due to failures in the SEACOM and EASSy submarine cable systems, which are fundamental to the region's network infrastructure. The incident was reported by the Internet observatory Netblocks, which also highlighted the severe impact on countries such as Tanzania and the French island of Mayotte, while Mozambique and Malawi suffered moderate disruption that affected online activities and communication.

The network security company Cloudflare confirmed the failures and shared further details in a post on the social network X (formerly Twitter), noting that the disruptions stemmed from problems on the SEACOM cables and the Eastern Africa Submarine Cable System (EASSy), affecting not only Mozambique but also Tanzania, Malawi and Madagascar.

While technical teams worked to repair the damage and restore normality as quickly as possible, the affected nations adopted temporary measures to maintain Internet services, which are essential for a wide range of daily operations, from business communications to emergency services.

This episode underlined the vulnerability of connectivity systems in regions that depend heavily on a limited number of Internet infrastructures, highlighting the urgent need to invest in more robust and diversified networks to prevent future disruptions.
