Mozambique's Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane, has expressed the Government's intention to support the management of Mozambique Airlines (LAM) in identifying and correcting the "right path" for the company, following the emergence of allegations of embezzlement and internal sabotage. This statement comes in response to a challenging period for the state airline, marked by allegations of mismanagement and fraudulent practices.

A scheme to divert money was recently revealed, which is said to have caused significant losses to LAM, as shown by the improper use of card payment terminals (TPA/POS) in ticket sales offices. This alarming situation was disclosed by Sérgio Matos, LAM's restructuring director, who reported the presence of payment devices not officially recognised by the company and discrepancies in the aircraft fuel supply records.

Faced with these challenges, the Prime Minister reiterated the Government's readiness to help resolve these problems, emphasising the need to adhere to strict and transparent management practices. Maleiane stressed the importance of correcting any breaches of the management rules, using appropriate legal and financial instruments, and highlighted the role of the competent institutions in investigating acts of ill intent.

LAM, which has been undergoing a revitalisation process led by the South African company Fly Modern Ark since last year, faces the challenge of overcoming years of operational difficulties, including limitations on its fleet and a lack of investment. The restructuring plan under way aims to restore LAM to its former stature as a model of an efficient and successful public company.

Through this intervention, the Mozambican Government shows itself determined to ensure the sustainability and success of LAM, which is essential not only for the national economy but also for connectivity and mobility within and outside the country. The expectation is that these measures will lead to a significant improvement in the airline's management, restoring passengers' confidence and contributing to the development of the Mozambican aviation sector.
