Geny Catamo's meteoric rise in Portuguese football has been a talking point in many corners of the world, but especially in Mozambique, where the 22-year-old is seen as a promise and a source of national pride.

In 2018, Catamo, then only 17, was playing for Black Bulls' under-17s in Mozambique. His skill and determination caught the attention of Portugal, taking him to Amora, where he quickly stood out in the under-19s and the senior team. However, his dream was always to play for Sporting's first team, one of the giants of Portuguese football.

The road to the "Lions'" A team was not easy. Despite the challenges, Catamo never gave up. When he arrived at the Alcochete Academy, he faced competition from other talented wingers, such as Joelson Fernandes and Bruno Tavares. But the Mozambican was not intimidated. With clear goals set, he worked hard, focusing not just on running more, but on running with purpose and intensity.

His dedication and effort were rewarded. His appearance on the pitch, during a Portuguese Cup match against Olivais e Moscavide, was decisive. Catamo not only scored a goal but also set up another, showing his speed and technique, characteristics that make him a unique player.

After loan spells at V. Guimarães and Marítimo, where unfortunately he suffered with injuries, coach Rúben Amorim recognised his talent and decided to bring him into Sporting's first team. Since then, Catamo has been a key player, contributing significantly in several matches.

Off the pitch, Catamo's future at Sporting looks equally promising. He is about to renew his contract until 2028, with a salary that reflects his growing value in the world of football. However, the release clause, currently set at 45 million euros, could be revised, with rumours that it could rise to 60 million.

However, one outstanding issue is the ownership of the player's registration rights. Currently, Sporting owns only 25% of Catamo's rights, having acquired that percentage from Amora. Negotiations to acquire the full rights are under way, but the price is expected to be significantly higher than originally agreed, given the player's meteoric rise.

In Mozambique, Catamo's success is celebrated with enthusiasm. The young player is seen not only as a football talent but also as an example of determination and resilience for all Mozambicans.
