In a gesture of remarkable generosity, France, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP), has decided to allocate the sum of one million euros. The main aim of this generous contribution is to strengthen the fight against malnutrition affecting the northern region of Mozambique, as recently announced by the United Nations agency.
This French financial contribution is directed towards strengthening the National Nutritional Rehabilitation Programme, a noble initiative of the Mozambican government focused on preventing and combating acute malnutrition. This relevant information was shared today by the WFP.
The generous sum is expected to benefit approximately 90,000 inhabitants of the three northern provinces of Mozambique (Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa). The focus is especially on pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Antonella D'Aprile, the WFP representative in Mozambique, expressed her gratitude for the arrival of this French support at a crucial time. She also stressed the importance of this contribution, which will allow the implementation of a set of preventive and therapeutic measures aimed at groups of people in vulnerable situations.
In Mozambique, the challenge of chronic malnutrition persists, affecting 38% of children under five, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) from 2021.
According to the INE, the distribution of this problem varies by province: all the provinces in the central and northern regions of Mozambique show prevalence rates considered extremely high, with Nampula province being in the most alarming situation.
