The choice of Filipe Nyusi's successor as Frelimo's presidential candidate has not yet been decided, with meetings and sessions of the party's Central Committee scheduled to discuss various issues, but with no confirmation that the selection of the candidate will be on the agenda. The selection process is described as complex, given the need to present a candidate who responds to the aspirations of the Mozambican people and demonstrates unequivocal competence.
Meanwhile, at the national council of the Mozambican Youth Organisation (OJM), an organisation linked to the Frelimo party that met in Matola, Nyusi called for an "expressive, clear and convincing" victory in the general elections scheduled for 9 October. Nyusi, who cannot run for a new term because of constitutional limits, stressed the importance of this victory as the party's "greatest priority of the moment".
This is the seventh time that the country will go to the polls for presidential and legislative elections, and also marks the second election for provincial governors and the fourth for provincial assemblies.
