Since May 2023, Mozambique has been implementing a visa facilitation policy that exempts tourists from countries considered low-risk. This measure, which includes the creation of a platform for applying for visas online and the exemption from tourist and business visas for citizens of 29 states, resulted in the issuing of 28,963 visas up to December 2023. This effort is part of a broader strategy to make Mozambique a more attractive destination for tourists and investors, thus contributing to the country's competitiveness on the international stage.
The decision to simplify the visa application process, together with the revision of the granting of investment visas for longer periods, reflects the Government's commitment to promoting tourism and foreign investment. With average spending estimated at 110 dollars per visitor and an average length of stay of four days, each tourist represents a significant inflow of new funds into the Mozambican economy. This increase in visitor arrivals is seen as a vital boost to economic growth and to the development of the tourism sector in the country.
In addition, data released by the Government indicate that more than 13,000 foreigners have benefited from this visa exemption policy since its implementation, with most visitors entering the country for tourism. The nationalities that have shown the most interest in Mozambique include Americans, Britons, Portuguese, Chinese and Germans. This diversity of visitors underlines the measure's success in attracting a new profile of tourists to the country.
The Mozambican authorities remain optimistic about the positive impact of these policies on the local economy, hoping they will continue to foster the tourism sector and attract foreign investment. The measure benefits the economy not only through increased consumption and job creation but also by promoting Mozambique as a leading tourist destination worldwide.
