Cabo Delgado is witnessing the start of a new phase with the entry into operation of the first cashew nut processing factory, located in Palma district. The undertaking, valued at 30 million meticais, comes as a reflection of the stabilisation of the region, shaken by a wave of terrorist attacks since 2017. The inauguration, held this week, was presided over by the provincial governor, Valige Tauabo, who highlighted the importance of the project for the local economy and for industrial diversification.

The new factory, with the capacity to process 1,500 tonnes of nuts a year, will employ around 100 people and provide an outlet for production from neighbouring districts, including Nangade, Mueda, Mocímboa da Praia and Muidumbe. "With this investment, we are creating a market for the province’s biggest cashew producers", the governor, Tauabo, stressed, in a statement quoted by the Mozambique News Agency.

As well as representing an important economic hub, the factory is seen as a symbol of the region’s rebirth after the challenges caused by armed conflict. Tauabo stressed that the infrastructure "is proof that Palma is once again open and safe for investment", saying that this is a decisive moment for Cabo Delgado.

The project was promoted by "The Sunshine Approach Foundation", an organisation dedicated to supporting disadvantaged communities through sustainable, locally impactful initiatives. The factory arrives at a strategic moment, as the cashew nut marketing campaign for 2024-2025 will be launched later this month of October.

The governor also highlighted that this investment is part of a broader vision for the industrialisation of the province, based on making use of local raw materials. "This is a milestone on the road to Cabo Delgado’s economic diversification and a clear sign of confidence in the new phase of stabilisation we are experiencing", he added.

With the Palma factory now in operation, the authorities expect not only an economic boost for local producers, but also a significant increase in the industrialisation of cashew nuts, one of Mozambique’s most emblematic products, which could gain a new lease of life from this innovative facility. The inauguration not only strengthens the province’s agricultural and industrial sector, but also reinforces the climate of confidence taking hold in Cabo Delgado, opening doors for future investment.
