Since 1992, ESMABAMA, a non-profit association based in the city of Beira, has made a tangible difference to the lives of thousands of Mozambicans. Operating in the districts of Búzi, Chibabava and Machanga, in the south of Sofala Province, the organisation has been a pillar of hope and community development. Officially recognised by the Boletim da República in 2004, the association embodies a dedication to Mozambique's sustainable progress, with the support of solid partners and in cooperation with the local government. This work rests on three fundamental pillars: Education, Health and Agriculture and Livestock, pillars that interlink and reinforce one another in building stronger, more resilient communities.

Believing in education as the foundation of human and community development, ESMABAMA brings quality schooling to the remote areas of Sofala Province. Among its most significant projects is the Projecto Soprinhos, which provides pre-school for children in rural areas, easing the transition to primary education and strengthening community bonds. In addition, in partnership with the State, it runs community schools from grade 1 to grade 12, working to improve methodologies and the teaching process. The missions of Estaquinha, Mangunde, Barada and Machanga are examples of how educational provision goes beyond the limits of the classroom, extending to intermediate agricultural institutes that teach farming techniques and promote the sharing of knowledge, encouraging a sustainable future. Complementarily, adult literacy, with an emphasis on women, who make up 60% of participants, reinforces the association's commitment to inclusion and gender equality, a clear bet on equity and community empowerment. The management of school boarding houses allows students from distant areas to overcome geographical barriers and continue their studies, making the dream of education an accessible reality.

In health, one of the most pressing challenges in rural Mozambique, ESMABAMA makes a difference by responding effectively to the needs of populations who often have to travel long distances to access medical care. The management of the health centres of Barada, Estaquinha and Mangunde, in collaboration with the State, ensures consultations, vaccination, antenatal care, inpatient care and assistance for chronic patients, directly affecting the quality of life in the communities. Beyond infrastructure, the organisation offers fundamental support through "mother waiting homes", which allow pregnant women to await childbirth in safety, reducing the risks of complications and maternal mortality, a solution adapted to local realities. The association's commitment also extends to food support for malnourished patients and psychosocial support for victims of gender-based violence. Through the DREAM programme of the Community of Sant’Egidio, ESMABAMA follows up HIV-positive patients on antiretroviral treatment, offering specialised care by raising awareness among community activists about not giving up on medication.

Agriculture, essential to the subsistence of rural communities, is another area of activity where the association plays a crucial role. With projects aimed at developing technical skills, it helps both farmers and students at the agricultural institutes to optimise farming practices. In the fields of Estaquinha, Mangunde, Barada and Machanga, the transformation of the land for community benefit is visible. Through the running of its agricultural projects, ESMABAMA trains farming associations and focuses on spreading good practices, which are strategies that ensure growing resilience and self-sufficiency in local communities. In agriculture and livestock they strengthen food security and the diversity of resources. A major challenge in this area is climate change, which greatly affects production, compounded by the breakdown of machinery during Cyclone Idai, which it has not been possible to recover.

In emergencies, such as natural disasters and conflicts, ESMABAMA reaffirms its commitment to communities, mobilising resources to support those most in need. This capacity for rapid and effective response confirms the crucial role the organisation has played over more than 30 years, turning challenges into achievements through an integrated approach that combines education, health, and agriculture and livestock. With dedication and perseverance, ESMABAMA has shaped lives, created opportunities and renewed hopes, seeking to chart a path towards a fairer and more promising future in Mozambique.
