Chizavane is one of the places I love most in Mozambique. Whenever I can, I take the road there with my family. It is not a reserve, it is not “demarcated”, but it is a natural reserve, because it is looked after as such!
Imagine a trip of 3 to 4 days to this paradise. It is not just a district in Gaza province; it is a space where nature seems to have created its own world, a place that makes us feel that limits do not exist. Here, the sea is a vibrant blue, and the clean sandy beaches embrace us with a beauty that almost seems straight out of a film.
As we walk along the coast, we find rock and coral reefs that form immense natural pools — safe, calm, perfect for a swim or simply for relaxing while we listen to the sound of the waves. It is as if the sea invites us in to forget the rest of the world. And, throughout the year, the people of Chizavane make the most of the fruits of the sea, gathering oysters and mussels (not to be missed, as they truly taste of the sea) from the more hidden rocks, always ready to share a little of their bounty with those who visit.
In the whale season, between July and November, everything changes a little. The ocean becomes a living stage: whales leaping, males showing off to the females with unpredictable jumps. It is a true natural spectacle, a dance of seduction that leaves no one indifferent. Watching these moments is almost like being in the middle of a love story written by the sea itself.
Watching the fishermen at their search, we can see the effort of men and women, young and old, who face the sea with courage, knowing that time is short and the sea is, at times, violent. Faces marked by the sun, calloused hands, but always with a wide smile — these are the people who feed visitors with shellfish and fresh fish and stories of a life bound to the sea. It is an experience that moves you with the authenticity and strength of those who live there.
But Chizavane is not only the sea. There are giant dunes, inland lagoons with incredible fauna and flora, with unique colours and shapes, the incredible sunset seen from the top of one of those spots... Every corner reveals a secret, a new landscape worth exploring, experiencing with the senses. Yes, I sigh because whenever I remember this place and these moments it is as if I were there, such is the intensity with which all that natural beauty can be experienced!
The accommodation on offer is varied, with good-quality options and a comfort that makes us feel at home. When we arrive at Zona Braza, for example, we don't even think about unloading the car — we go straight to sit on the big terrace of the restaurant, overlooking the beach, and ask Narciso for a coffee; his smile, with a childlike soul, is contagious and makes any stress vanish. Here, it is clear that what matters is the feeling of peace that the place offers — a true refuge from everyday life, a piece of paradise within reach.
Chizavane reveals itself thus: a space without limits, where natural beauty, welcoming people and tranquillity come together to create a unique experience. A place that teaches us, with its simplicity, that true paradise lies in nature, in the hands that preserve it, in the stories it keeps. And, in the end, all we want is to stay a little longer, until the beach, the sea and its people carry us away again, with a smile on our face and a renewed soul.
