The tenth round of the polio vaccination campaign in Mozambique began yesterday, 28 May, and will run until next Saturday, 1 June. This campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 8,693,106 children, aged between zero and under 15 years, in 45 districts of the provinces of Zambézia, Tete, Cabo Delgado and Niassa.

The measure is considered crucial for interrupting transmission of the polio virus and protecting minors in the regions where the virus still persists. Although Mozambique was recently declared free of circulation of wild poliovirus (PSV1), the country still faces challenges with vaccine-derived strains, namely cVDPV1 and cVDPV2, as reported by the national director of the Ministry of Health's (MISAU) Expanded Programme on Immunisation, Leonildo Nhapose.

For the effective implementation of this campaign, around 34,000 people have been mobilised, including vaccinators, mobilisers, registrars, supervisors, coordinators, data entry clerks, logistics staff, independent monitors, partners and drivers. This task force is essential to ensure that vaccination reaches all target children, thus guaranteeing the coverage needed to combat polio in the affected areas.
