The problem of outstanding debts is currently troubling the company Águas da Região Metropolitana de Maputo. According to information made public, there are approximately 25,000 users enjoying the water supply service without settling the corresponding bills, with illegal connections adding to the problem.
Cremildo Fernando, a prominent figure in the commercial department of the public company, estimates that the number of indebted consumers could be around 25,000, suggesting that a major factor in this situation is the use of illicit means of obtaining water.
It should be stressed that non-payment of bills has a considerable impact on the company's financial health. According to what has been revealed, losses are close to 50 million meticais a month, a figure that includes costs and tax charges arising from the failure to pay bills regularly.
As a way of dealing with this scourge of illegal access to the network, the water supply company is preparing to launch a campaign to disconnect and remove installations from customers in debt.
The action under the campaign, according to Cremildo Fernando, will be aimed especially at those who prevent the company's technicians from carrying out the necessary meter readings and inspections.
On the other hand, the company's manager has also introduced a programme designed to encourage customers to settle their overdue bills consistently, offering as a reward a 25% discount on the total amount of the debt.
This new campaign will run in all the neighbourhoods of the cities of Maputo, Matola and Boane, in an attempt to achieve greater regularity in payment for the services provided.
