After a hiatus of almost seven years, a light is appearing at the end of the tunnel for the Moamba-Major dam project, on the Incomáti River, in the district of Moamba, Maputo province. The Brazilian government, which previously contributed funding through the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), is considering resuming its financial support for the structural project in Mozambique.
This hydraulic project, whose reservoir is intended to supply approximately 760 million cubic metres of water, has as its main mission the supply of the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region. This vast territory comprises not only Maputo, but also the city of Matola and the neighbouring districts of Boane and Marracuene. With a budget set at 700 million US dollars, the dam stands as a crucial pillar in the region's development and water sustainability.
Although the bureaucratic and specific procedures for the effective resumption of this financing are still being meticulously analysed and discussed between the parties, a tone of optimism permeates the talks between senior Mozambican and Brazilian authorities. The expectation is that an instrument will be devised and put into practice that is capable of quickly unlocking the funding.
The negotiations, marked by seriousness and mutual commitment, point to significant developments, albeit guided by prudence and rigour in analysing the specifics that precede the resumption of financing. The aim, therefore, is to build a solid and sustainable solution that will allow the Moamba-Major dam to establish itself as a landmark in Mozambique's infrastructural and social landscape.
Thus, the Mozambican people, who have been patiently awaiting developments, may soon witness tangible progress on this project of vital importance to the region, as a symbol of international cooperation and of the sustainable development sought by all. The future of the dam, and by extension of the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region, is now in focus, allowing us to dream of days when water security and harmonious development become an unshakeable reality.
