In an incident that fortunately caused no casualties, two aircraft of Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM) collided during a parking manoeuvre in the province of Inhambane, in southern Mozambique. The incident, which took place on Sunday, led to a reorganisation of the airline's scheduled flights, highlighting the operational challenges LAM faces.
The airline, recognised as Mozambique's flag carrier in the aviation sector, has already reported the incident to Mozambique's Civil Aviation Authority, following the regulatory procedures for occurrences of this kind. It is worth noting that one of the aircraft involved, both of which were Q400s, has already resumed normal operations, demonstrating a swift response by the airline to the situation.
The incident comes at a time of transition for LAM, which has been under the management of the South African company Fly Modern Ark (FMA) since April last year, with a restructuring plan under way to revitalise the airline. After years of operational problems, including a limited fleet and a lack of investment, culminating in a number of non-fatal incidents attributed to poor maintenance, LAM is seeking to turn the page and secure a safer and more efficient future for its flights.
This recent incident is a reminder of the importance of safety and rigorous maintenance in aviation, as well as of the continuing efforts needed to improve Mozambique's national airline.
