With China's backing, the ambitious Africa Bridge project was launched last Saturday in the urban district of Kamavota, in the city of Maputo, an initiative that aims to strengthen Mozambique's efforts to reduce agricultural poverty and promote sustainable development.

According to the Mozambique News Agency (AIM), the project is based on a combination of educational assistance, improved infrastructure and agricultural technical cooperation. The action is coordinated by the Africa Bridge Development Programme, an international organisation based in Africa with the support of the Foreign Affairs Office of Shandong Province, China, in collaboration with the Shandong Province Entrepreneurs Association in Mozambique.

The initiative brings in agricultural experts from China's Shandong region, who will work side by side with Mozambican partners, with the aim of strengthening food security and improving the technical skills of local farmers.

During the launch ceremony, the symbolism of cooperation was translated into concrete actions: school materials, agricultural and construction tools were handed over, as well as financial support for the rehabilitation of schools and the development of community infrastructure.

For Wu Jinjia, chargé d'affaires ad interim of the Chinese Embassy in Mozambique, the project is a practical realisation of the “10 Partnership Actions” announced by Beijing during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). Chinese diplomacy thus underlines Beijing's strategic commitment to Mozambican agricultural modernisation, promoting greater synergy between the social and civil resources of both countries.

Jabula Zibia, National Director of Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries, described Africa Bridge as an essential initiative for energising the agricultural sector and strengthening the community fabric in Mozambique. Zibia also highlighted China as an indispensable agricultural partner, noting that bilateral cooperation has borne visible fruit in areas such as technology transfer and food production.

For his part, Wen Nuan, vice-governor of Shandong, recalled that companies from the province have actively contributed to building infrastructure, donating housing and developing farmland in Mozambican territory, with positive effects on local communities.

Established in 2024, the Africa Bridge Development Programme has distinguished itself by promoting sustainable projects, business innovation platforms and strategic resource sharing. Its work is already being felt in several African countries, with an emphasis on agricultural initiatives geared towards poverty reduction.
