The Mozambican pathologist Cesaltina Lorenzoni was honoured with the “Global Health Leader Award” in the field of cancer on 8 June. The award was presented during the Global Health Catalyst Summit, held at Johns Hopkins University in Washington DC, USA.
The distinction was justified by the summit's Organising Committee, led by Professor Wil Ngwa of Harvard and Johns Hopkins universities, because of Cesaltina Lorenzoni's excellence in world science, especially in the design and implementation of research and clinical trials, as well as in introducing new technologies and models for cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment. Her influence extends across Africa, the Americas and other parts of the world, where she has catalysed collaborations and designed artificial intelligence programmes and technologies to improve access to cancer care, especially in low-income countries.
At the ceremony, Lorenzoni expressed her gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to improving the quality of life of cancer patients in Mozambique and globally, as well as to seeking innovative solutions for cancer treatment.
The Global Health Catalyst Summit is an initiative of Harvard University and partners, intended to promote international collaboration with the aim of eliminating disparities in global health, focusing on cancer and related diseases.
Cesaltina Lorenzoni is Head of the National Cancer Control Programme, Scientific and Teaching Director of Maputo Central Hospital and President-elect of the African Organisation for Research and Training in Cancer. In September 2023, she was also honoured by the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) at the society's Annual Meeting in the USA, for her work in the prevention, research and treatment of cervical cancer, as well as for the training of postgraduates in Gynaecological Oncology (TORRE) (FAOHome).
