The Transport and Communications Fund (FTC) is preparing to significantly strengthen the urban public transport fleet in Mozambique, with the purchase of 390 new buses. The aim is to improve mobility in the big cities and provincial capitals, reducing waiting times and increasing passenger transport capacity.

Of this total, 150 vehicles will go to the Greater Maputo Metropolitan Region, where about one million passengers travel every day. The fleet will consist of 100 large buses and 50 medium-sized ones, all powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), an option that combines operational efficiency with lower environmental impact.

For the provincial capitals, the plan provides for the purchase of 100 medium-sized diesel buses, with the aim of improving access to public transport in rural and peri-urban areas. In addition, 40 vehicles will be allocated to transporting civil servants in various State institutions.

The new units may be distributed both to municipal transport companies and to private cooperatives operating on different road corridors across the country.

The need to strengthen the fleet is particularly urgent in the Maputo metropolitan area, where the Maputo Municipal Passenger Transport Company (EMTPM) currently has only 109 buses, of which about 65 are operational each day. The shortage of vehicles affects thousands of passengers, making the new purchase a key element in improving public transport service.

With this investment, the hope is not only to ease the pressure on the urban transport system, but also to provide greater comfort and predictability for users.
