Maputo's Baixa may be on the brink of one of the most profound urban transformations of recent decades. The area managed by Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), where commercial activity and thousands of passengers converge daily, is at the centre of an ambitious redevelopment project aimed at modernising one of the capital's most strategic spaces.
The plan provides for the demolition of some existing structures along Avenida 24 de Julho, paving the way for the construction of a large, modern shopping centre, designed to establish itself as a new economic and architectural landmark of the city.
The intervention also includes the construction of a multi-storey car park with capacity for around 400 vehicles. The infrastructure should help reduce road congestion and improve access to central Maputo, addressing one of the main traffic difficulties in the area.
Another component of the project will be implemented on Avenida 25 de Setembro, where a modern intermodal passenger terminal is planned. Equipped with stairs and escalators, the new terminal will allow a more efficient connection between trains, buses and taxis, strengthening the integration of public transport and providing greater comfort and functionality for users.
The initiative fits within the urban renewal strategy of the city of Maputo and forms part of Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique's vision of creating a modern mobility hub, capable of energising the economy and improving the experience of residents, passengers and visitors.
