Mozambique's Tax Authority (AT) failed to reach the annual revenue collection target set for 2023. Although it collected around 338 billion meticais, the figure fell short of the Government's expectation of around 360 billion meticais. This result represents growth of 11% compared with 2022, when approximately 302,470.73 million meticais were collected.
The chair of the AT, Amélia Muendane, highlighted that, despite the challenges the country has faced, including the Covid-19 pandemic and the impacts of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, as well as terrorism in northern Mozambique, the economy maintained average annual growth of around 9% from 2015 to 2023. This performance reflects the resilience of the Mozambican economy in the face of significant adversity.
The gap between the target and the amount collected underlines the continuing challenges Mozambique faces, both economically and in terms of fiscal management. This discrepancy may have implications for the country's budget planning and execution, as well as for the funding of essential public projects and services.
