Mozambican activist Alice Banze has once again been included in the prestigious list of the 100 most influential women in Africa, an honour awarded on 9 November during the 4th edition of the African Women Awards – Africa's Greatest Icons, held in Kigali, Rwanda.
A leading figure in the fight for human rights and gender equality, Banze sees her name highlighted for the second time among female leaders from across the continent. The first nomination came in 2024. The award recognises “her unwavering commitment to gender equality and sustainable development”, according to the event's organisers, who honour achievements and leadership across many sectors.
The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, responded to the nomination with a note of congratulation in which he describes the distinction as “a source of pride that raises Mozambique's standing on the international stage”. In the same message, Chapo acknowledges Alice Banze's “tireless engagement”, highlighting her role as President of the African Women's Academy and Executive Director of the Gender and Sustainable Development Association.
The activist has become well known for her work on gender, human rights and community development in Africa. In 2021, she resigned from her post as a member of the National Elections Commission because she had not been given the opportunity to formally state her acceptance of the candidacy — a decision that, at the time, received wide media coverage.
