The sum of 6.5 million dollars (400 million meticais) was granted by the Korean government to the National Disaster Management Institute (INGD). This considerable amount is intended to help a total of 342,000 people whose lives have been affected by natural disasters and armed conflicts. The funds will be used and closely supervised by both UNDP and the INGD.
The humanitarian aid project will run for four years, focusing on communities living in the provinces of Sofala, Zambézia, Manica, Nampula, Niassa and Cabo Delgado.
In addition to seeking to minimise the damage caused by natural disasters, this plan also includes measures aimed at preventing armed conflicts, information confirmed by Jinjoo Hyum, director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency.
The planned actions include strengthening the skills of disaster risk management committees, improving disaster response strategies, building higher-quality community infrastructure and providing communities with equipment and training for early warning and response systems.
