Sussuro
Sarah Birkett, owner, in her own words
"Sussurro is a boutique hotel located on the Nhamabue peninsula, on the secluded shores of a turquoise lagoon in Inhambane, in southern Mozambique. It has 6 spacious bungalows, completely enclosed by nature, with every amenity to welcome the most demanding guests in the greatest comfort.
We are a space that celebrates African material and craft culture, seeking to support local artisans by exhibiting and selling Mozambican handicrafts on the property. We have a library, pool, bar, yoga deck and a private beach. The cuisine at our restaurant is a fusion of modern and East African cooking, using only fresh regional produce, from the ocean to the table, or straight from our own vegetable garden. What we cannot grow we buy from nearby suppliers, as it is part of our mission to stimulate local markets.
We offer a wide range of personalised activities, such as dhow safaris, diving, snorkelling, picnics on nearby islands, romantic outings for couples, among many other experiences. Even during the difficult times that besiege us, we continue to receive plenty of international and local tourists. We have only 6 suites, that is, capacity for just 12 guests on the property at once, which means guests can travel in family "bubbles" or restricted circles of friends, allowing groups to be safer.

Our cleanliness standards are extremely high, since we are providing a luxury product. We favour outdoor activities, airy kitchens, decks and verandas, and we take care not to let guests spend too much time in front of screens, because we want them to make the most of the opportunity so as to disconnect completely. A natural, holistic antidote for a time when many feel stifled by the stress of everyday life.
For the future, we intend to offer our visitors new exclusive safari solutions, as we believe there is no reason for travellers to have to leave the country to enjoy wildlife experiences. In recent years, conservation and reforestation programmes in Mozambique have grown immensely, and we have the opportunity to showcase genuine conservation efforts and see these initiatives supported in a meaningful and truly sustainable way.
Although we devote ourselves with the greatest commitment, we know we will never reach the highest level of perfection. We are interested in the journey, in learning and growing and, ultimately, in becoming better people and a robust team. Slow, organic growth is the path we consider most valuable. Recognising the slowness in this process is the key to remaining strong in Sussurro's ethos and values."
