How would you define your money mindset? How do you feel when you look at your finances, earn money, pay bills and talk about money?

For many of us, money stirs up a lot of emotion. For some it may be positive, but for many it is negative. We feel fear when we see bills, and guilt when we look at our bank statement. It is important that you become aware of these emotions, so that you can process them and work on creating a money mindset that makes you feel good and helps you work better with your money.

Emotions drive much of our behaviour, but many of us do not always understand them or know where they come from. Think about how you deal with money when you are feeling certain emotions. For example, when you feel sad, do you go shopping for some retail therapy? Why do you do that? Is it something you did as a child? Did your parents do it? How do you see money in that case? Money is made to be spent. Does money buy happiness?

Our beliefs and behaviours about money have often been shaped when we were young, when we were more susceptible to outside influences. As we grow up, we carry on with these beliefs and behaviours because we do not know any other reality. The behaviours can be destructive to our financial lives, and stop us from creating the finances we want.

What new beliefs would you like to cultivate to create a more comfortable and prosperous financial life? What do you really believe when it comes to money?

  1. Money runs out.

  2. You have to work hard to earn money.

  3. Money comes easily.

  4. You need money to make money.

  5. Rich people live in debt.

  6. I deserve money.

Identify your beliefs and ask yourself where they come from. Once you have discovered the beliefs you hold, you will need to determine which ones are helping you achieve your financial goals, and which ones are holding you back.
