The role of women in banking is no longer a question of representation. Today it is a question of impact, decision-making and value creation. We sought to understand how this evolution translates, in practice, into the way a financial institution is organised, makes decisions and grows.
In Mozambican Women's Month, we entered the world of Millennium bim with a clear aim: to understand, from the inside, how an institution is built in which female talent is consistently integrated into its identity and its growth strategy. More than observing, we wanted to listen, to grasp the dynamics and to identify the concrete role women play in the running and evolution of the bank.

Our visit begins at the institution's headquarters, where we were received by Liliana Catoja, the bank's Executive Director, who welcomes us and guides us. From her vision, we understand the place of women's contribution in an organisation that grows on the basis of diversity of experience, the valuing of merit and the creation of real opportunities for development. More than presence, women's contribution here is associated with the ability to influence decisions, steer priorities and help build an organisation better prepared for the challenges of the financial sector.

“In this Mozambican Women's Month, we have opened the doors of Millennium bim to show the role of women in the bank's growth”, the Director told us, and over the course of the conversation we saw a path built with intention. The female presence goes hand in hand with increasing levels of responsibility and translates into active participation in decision-making, in setting priorities and in the strategic direction of different areas of the bank. In the words of Liliana Catoja, “In different areas and at different levels of responsibility, there are many women who contribute every day to the progress of our institution.” It is from this vision that we begin to understand the individual journeys that shape the bank.

Journeys that build the bank

Talking to different employees, we realised that joining Millennium bim marks, for many, the start of a demanding and transformative journey. Some arrive with well-defined expectations, others with a desire to explore new possibilities and build their path within a solid structure. Being a woman in banking also means opening paths, as Daniela Ahmed, Compliance Officer, says. Over time, those expectations take shape through accumulated experience, continuous learning and teamwork. Challenges are part of growth, as Soraia Sulemane, Company Secretary, stresses. Each path develops at its own pace, but there are clear points in common: adaptation, growth sustained by challenges and self-assertion built with consistency. As journeys progress, responsibilities and the visibility of individual impact also increase, in a dynamic in which each person's contribution fits into a common goal.

Leadership, specialisation and influence

Throughout our visit, it became clear that, in a constantly evolving sector like banking, women's contribution plays an increasingly structuring role. Innovation grows when there is diversity, as Nídia Baronet, head of the Digital Banking Division, explains. Technical rigour, analytical capacity and strategic vision intersect with diverse experiences, creating more complete responses to market challenges. Technology also has a female face, adds Erica Pequenino, Head of the Information Security and Business Continuity Division. In areas such as risk, digital banking, compliance, marketing or technology, we find women who lead teams, guide projects and take an active part in building solutions. Quality starts with people, as Sheila Chemane, the Bank's Quality Director, reinforces. Her influence is felt in how the teams work, in the definition of processes and in the way challenges are analysed and overcome. Impact is built with vision, as Maria Simões, who heads the Treasury, Markets and International Division, observes. Different perspectives contribute to more balanced decisions and more effective responses. This diversity emerges as one of the central pillars of how the bank adapts and evolves.

Diversity that generates value

In an increasingly demanding context, it is clear that diversity is a strategic asset, with a direct impact on how teams think, decide and deliver results. Different journeys, experiences and ways of thinking feed a dynamic environment, prepared to respond to constantly changing realities. Women bring new perspectives, as Virgínia Cardoso, Marketing Director for Business and Corporate, highlights. At Millennium bim, this diversity finds expression in a qualified and active female presence, with an impact at different levels of the organisation. Alignment between teams, combined with complementary skills, underpins a consistent, results-oriented way of working. The customer is always at the centre, as Eugenia Ah-Hoy, who heads the Corporate Customer Service Division, stresses. And it is this dynamic that is reflected in the culture lived day to day.

A culture built together

Throughout our visit, we felt an environment where collaboration, rigour and closeness coexist naturally. The organisational culture shows itself in practices, in relationships between teams and in the way the work is done. As Liliana Catoja emphasised, “These are some of the women of Millennium bim. Many others walk side by side, every day. And it is in this unity that the strength that drives the bank into the future is born.” We sensed a foundation based on trust, the sharing of knowledge and a common vision that guides collective growth. It is from this foundation that journeys emerge that go beyond the context of the bank.

A reflection of something bigger

The women we met at Millennium bim mirror a broader transformation, visible in different sectors of Mozambican society. Each journey reflects an evolution marked by greater participation, responsibility and influence. By giving visibility to these paths, we also seek to reinforce a message of continuity, in which individual growth contributes to collective change. That reading stays with us until the end of this visit.

A bank that grows with women

At the end of this visit, one essential idea is clear: Millennium bim's growth goes hand in hand with the development of its people. Among them, women play a central role in building a solid, dynamic and forward-looking organisation. The collective journey gains strength in consistency, dedication and the ability to turn experience into value. It is along this path that a bank that grows with women is built, every day.
