The family of the iconic Mozambican artist Malangatana Valente Ngwenya is preparing to create a Digital Interpretation Centre, due to open in 2026, to mark the 90th anniversary of the artist’s birth. Located in Matalana, in Maputo province, the centre will gather and make available works, archives and other materials in digital format, democratising access to the vast artistic legacy of Malangatana, an essential reference in the visual arts in Mozambique and across the African continent.
The project, announced by Mutxhini Ngwenya, the artist’s son, is at the stage of collecting materials, with an appeal for institutional and individual partnerships to make this tribute to the memory of the multifaceted creator a reality. The centre will highlight Malangatana’s versatility across several artistic fields, such as painting, sculpture, tapestry, ceramics and poetry, as well as his political and cultural contribution on the national and international stage.
With works recognised worldwide and honours such as the title of "Artist for Peace" from UNESCO, Malangatana continues to inspire generations. The centre arises as a bridge between past and future, perpetuating the genius of one of the greatest exponents of Mozambican culture.
