At a time when entrepreneurship is gaining more and more prominence, we met Ivan Martins, a healthcare professional who decided to open his own physiotherapy practice. This decision, inspired by the perception of a shortage of private clinics focused on the field, and by the desire to offer a welcoming, less hospital-like environment to his patients, marks a new chapter in the physiotherapy sector in Mozambique. “I wanted to create a space where patients would not feel they were in a hospital environment. I invested in the decor and the running of the space so that they would feel at home,” shares the entrepreneur, showing his dedication to providing a distinctive service.
The need for physiotherapy in Maputo is vast and varied. “In recent years, concern for the body and health has grown, leading more people to take up physical exercise and, as a result, to seek our services,” he explains. This trend is reflected in greater demand from sportspeople, as well as from parents of children with respiratory problems and patients with back problems.
Opening the practice was not a journey free of challenges. “The biggest challenge was deciding to open my clinic. I am demanding and wanted every standard to be met. My wife Samantha's support was crucial in that process,” Ivan confesses. The impact on the community is undeniable. “Our aim is to rehabilitate and give our patients back their quality of life,” he says. What sets his practice apart is the care taken over decor, comfort, quality of equipment and accessibility, offering a service that is unique in the region.
Innovating in the field, the practice integrates osteopathy and pressotherapy into its treatments. “We rely on machines from reputable brands, such as Chattanooga and Globus, to ensure the effectiveness of the treatments,” Ivan explains. Continuing training is a priority. “Every year I do training courses in Portugal to stay up to date and bring the best to my patients,” he reveals, underlining his commitment to excellence. The partnerships established with other healthcare providers, such as Ayamed, are also a pillar of his business, providing patients with an integrated, higher-quality service. Looking to the future, Ivan Martins remains focused on continuous improvement. “Expansion is something we can consider, but for now the focus is on improving the service we offer more and more,” he concludes.
This account is an inspiring example of how vision, dedication and the desire to make a difference in the community can shape the future of entrepreneurship in Mozambique, especially in the healthcare sector.
