Entrepreneurship and tourism in Mozambique

Written by: Neyde Cuna

Anyone can be an entrepreneur. Having an entrepreneurial attitude is therefore a matter of individual choice, continuous evolution and the pursuit of knowledge, not a natural tendency or a gift. Mozambique is a tourist region with countless business opportunities yet to be explored.

Despite the covid-19 pandemic that continues to ravage the world, domestic tourism is returning more and more, and international tourism is also recovering, which means that pent-up demand is already beginning to emerge again and there is a continuing growth trend, which keeps us optimistic, wanting to believe that, sooner than expected, tourism will come back in full force, and that investing in businesses in this sector is a sound bet. In our country, this is a very fertile sector in which to be an entrepreneur. It makes it possible to start businesses, for every kind of investment, from burger or traditional-dish food trucks, souvenirs, handicrafts, specialist guides, boat trips, restaurants, accommodation, travel agencies, tour operators and much more, using your own resources, loans, government financing, awards, incentives or crowdfunding. Be entrepreneurs!

Entrepreneurship in tourism is a very important tool for economic and social inclusion. It is a pillar for competitiveness, innovation, creativity, development and rapid growth in Mozambique in the sector. Rural tourism in the country is a segment that also deserves considerable attention. Although little explored, it has incredible potential. It is a lucrative path and, better still, one that contributes to preserving culture and the environment.

What makes an entrepreneur is their actions. Everyone starts in the same way, with the same tools, with who they were, with what they knew, with what they were familiar with and with what they had. It is about making mistakes and learning from them. It is about having uncertainties, not certainties. It is about knowing that it takes a struggle. Above all, it is about loving what you do. Anyone can be an entrepreneur!

Investing in tourism, in quality and differentiated businesses, is improving Mozambique’s image as a tourist destination. The hope is that, in Mozambique, even with all the challenges the sector faces, more and more people will develop an entrepreneurial mindset. An attitude that is not intended only for a small group of people, but is made up of a mosaic of tiny pieces, micro-entrepreneurs who build an entire nation. McDonald’s, Starbucks, KFC and Marriott Hotels are examples of investments that began as tiny pieces in the tourism industry and became giants. Being an entrepreneur in this sector means investing to provide wonderful, unique and unforgettable experiences to visitors.

Much more than generating profit, entrepreneurship in tourism is art, it is making dreams come true, it is daring, it is relishing challenges. Doing things differently. Making things happen!
