A new study led by Dr Dean Ornish, and published in the scientific journal Alzheimer’s Research & Therapy, casts a new light on the treatment of Alzheimer’s, reporting the reversal of symptoms in patients in the early stages of the disease. The study, part of an innovative clinical trial, was featured in the CNN documentary The Last Alzheimer's Patient, presented by medical correspondent Dr Sanjay Gupta.

The research focused on four key areas: a plant-based diet, regular physical exercise, group support and meditation or yoga practices. Cici Zerbe, one of the participating patients, witnessed a reversal of her symptoms after following these lifestyle changes. Zerbe shared her experience, reporting a considerable improvement, which suggests an alternative path in the fight against a disease normally seen as irreversible.

The research specifically targets mild cognitive impairment and early dementia due to Alzheimer’s, two conditions with a high impact on quality of life. According to Dr Ornish, intensive lifestyle interventions can not only slow the progress of the disease, but even reverse symptoms, by altering the cellular environment and promoting brain health.

The documentary premiered on CNN in May and is available to stream on the Max platform. This approach represents renewed hope for patients and researchers, bringing to light the impact of daily lifestyle choices on mental health and opening up new treatment prospects for Alzheimer’s.
