UBA Mozambique has been named Bank of the Year in Mozambique by the prestigious international magazine The Banker, in an award that reinforces the bank's position as one of the most solid, innovative and trustworthy financial institutions in the country.
This recognition comes at a time of strong affirmation for the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group, which, for the third time in five years, was named African Bank of the Year 2025 by The Banker, a Financial Times publication based in London. At this year's Bank of the Year Awards, UBA collected a total of ten awards, including national awards won by nine of its African subsidiaries, among them UBA Mozambique, alongside UBA Benin, Chad, Republic of the Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), Liberia, Mali, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Zambia.
The official awards ceremony took place at The Peninsula Hotel in London, at a gala that brought together leaders of the global financial sector.
Speaking after receiving the award, the Managing Director of UBA Mozambique, Pedro Maranguene, stressed the significance of this recognition for the bank and for the country: “It is with great honour that UBA Mozambique receives the Bank of the Year in Mozambique award from The Banker. This recognition reflects the effort, dedication and excellence of our entire team, as well as the trust of our customers and partners.”
He also highlighted that 2025 has been an extraordinary year for UBA Mozambique, marked by several national and international awards, namely:
• PMR – Golden Arrow 2025
• COMARP – Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative
• Superbrand Mozambique 2025/26
• Elite Employer, awarded by Tempus Global
“These awards show that we are building a strong, innovative bank that is deeply committed to the development of Mozambique and to the well-being of the communities where we operate. I thank our employees, customers, regulators and partners. This recognition belongs to all of us. We will continue to work with focus, transparency and innovation to serve ever better,” he concluded.
International recognition and Group performance
The Banker awards are widely regarded as the most rigorous and respected in world banking, honouring institutions that demonstrate exceptional performance, innovation and consistent strategic execution.
Commenting on UBA's wins, the banker.com website noted: “For the third time in five years, UBA Group has won the coveted Bank of the Year award for Africa. The group repeatedly outperforms its biggest continental rivals, collecting nine national awards this year — more than any other African bank.” The publication also stressed that the wins spanned a broad geographical area, including countries in ECOWAS, CEMAC and SADC, noting that the awards in Mozambique and Benin were particularly notable, given the highly competitive categories.
The Banker also highlighted the UBA Group's strong financial performance, which in 2024 recorded 46.8% growth in assets and a 6.1% increase in pre-tax profits in local currency, while maintaining significant investment in talent and technology. The bank's digital leadership was also recognised, notably Leo, the first African banking chatbot to enable cross-border payments through the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS).
The Group CEO of UBA, Oliver Alawuba, said the recognition confirms the bank's long-term strategy and its customer-centred approach: “This honour reflects the strength of our pan-African network, the trust of our customers and the dedication of our people. The awards won across different regions of Africa show that UBA is growing with impact, promoting financial inclusion and sustainable economic development.”
With more than 25,000 employees, 45 million customers and operations in 20 African countries, as well as the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates, United Bank for Africa continues to establish itself as a leading global African bank.
In Mozambique, UBA Mozambique is consolidating its position as a strategic partner for families, businesses and institutions, actively contributing to economic growth, financial inclusion and the country's sustainable development.
